Getting into college is a big step for high school graduates, and it comes with a lot of changes. For most students, it’s the first time they’re living away from home and managing their own life. Not surprisingly, adapting to this new lifestyle can be challenging. The following four tips will make high school graduates better prepared for college life.

Goal setting

When setting goals, whether they’re academic, career, or personal, remember they should be attainable but not too easy, so that you really have to push yourself to achieve them, and feel rewarded when you do. Writing down your goals and breaking down each huge, long-term goal into smaller more practical ones can help make it feel more real, and writing out a plan for achieving it can give you a roadmap to success.

Interpersonal skills

At college, you will interact with fellow students, professors, librarians, and many others. Strong interpersonal skills will help you build relationships during this time, and get more out of them. If you feel that your interpersonal skills need some work, practice asking thoughtful questions and listening closely, develop your understanding by putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, and enhance your self-confidence.

Studying

With fewer in-class hours and more on-your-own learning, you’re required to really digest learning material rather than simply memorize facts. To be successful in college you’ll need to learn how to integrate large amounts of information obtained through reading, do research, and write papers. Organization is the key, so if you are not someone who is naturally organized, set up your study schedule.

Budgeting

Managing money is a critical life skill, and for many, it is at college that they develop it for the first time. Start by estimating your financial balance. Then give high priority to the expenses on basic needs and determine how much money to set aside every month to cover those costs. Don’t forget about savings…and the fun stuff (movies, dinners out), too.

Western New Bridge Library Announcement

Shortened Library Hours for Spring Break

Library Hours have been shortened to 7 hours a day (9:00 a.m.~4:00 p.m.) for Spring Break from March 24 to March 30.

◆On Monday, March 24, at 10:30 a.m., Scott Sutton, a children’s writer, will tell stories to kids over seven. Sutton’s attractive style will surely inspire everyone present!

◆At 2:00 p.m., on March 25, Tuesday, a lecture will be delivered in Room 201, which focuses on the development of writing skill. Famous tutors from the district won’t disappoint you.

◆At 1:00 p.m., on March 26, the Georgetown Musicians will present an Irish Folk Concert, which will be entertaining for the entire family. Come for the music and stay to check out some relevant books for the rest of the week!

◆On Thursday, March 27, at 2:00 p.m., the annual Children’s Gathering will take place in Room 201, the second floor. ◆At 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 28, Enzo Monfre of the hit kids’ science show, ENZOology, will bring Fossils Live! Surely Enzo will take the audience back in time, deep beneath the surface of the earth, to uncover the mysteries of killer dinosaurs, and more. Enzo recently appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show — come and see him at the library!

When I was a high school student, a close friend went to New Zealand as an exchange student and I was very curious. I wasn’t able to become an exchange student myself, but I began talking to my parents about possibility of becoming a host family to see it. Our school had an active AFS (American Field Service) chapter, so we got information about hosting a student through AFS.

After further exploration, we decided to go for it. We received a student’s brief introduction. We looked over the pictures and her family and read the introduction. Her name was Simone and she was three years older than me, one year older than my brother. This was our student!

After informing AFs that we’d accept the student, we had the opportunity to call her on the phone and began writing to her. The accents of the Australian and American English were so different that we had a very hard time communicating. Thankfully, reading and writing each other’s letters was not a problem.

AFS began making the arrangements for Simone to come to America for her year as an exchange student. In August, we picked Simone up at the airport in St. Louis. During the year of Simone’s stay, we had our ups and downs. At first the accents were difficult. The first Sunday she attended church services with us, she didn’t understand anything that was said. Her Australian accent was very thick and she said we spoke too fast for her to follow our words. We, on the other hand, thought she spoke too fast and was difficult to understand. Learning to live with someone new isn’t always easy, but we managed.

Now, 18 years after first welcoming Simone into our family, she is still important to us. We have kept in close contact in the years since she left America. And the experience of being a host family for an exchange student during my high school is unforgettable for me.

I work at a company where there are about a gazillion employees. I can’t say that I know them all by name, but I know my fair share of them. I think that almost all of them know me. I’d say that’s the reason I’ve been able to go wherever it is I’ve made it to in this world. It’s all based on one simple principle: I believe every single person deserves to be acknowledged, however small or simple the greeting.

When I was about 10 years old, I was walking down the street with my mother. She stopped to speak to Mr.

Lee. I was busy trying to bulls-eye the “O” in the stop sign with a rock. I knew I could see Mr. Lee any old time around the neighborhood, so I didn’t pay any attention to him. After we passed Mr. Lee, my mother stopped me and said something that has stuck with me from that day until now. She said, “You let that be the last time you ever walk by somebody and not open up your mouth to speak, because even a dog can wag its tail when it passes you on the street.” That phrase sounds simple, but it’s been a guidepost for me and the foundation of who I am.

When you write an essay like this, you look in the mirror and see who you are and what makes up your character. I realized mine was cemented that day when I was 10 years old. Even then, I started to see that when I spoke to someone, they spoke back, and that felt good.

It’s not just something I believe in; it’s become a way of life. I believe that every person deserves to feel someone acknowledge their presence, no matter how humble they may be or even how important.

At work, I always used to say hello to the founder of the company and ask him how our business was doing. But I was also speaking to the people in the cafe and the people that cleaned the buildings, and asked how their children were doing. I remembered after a few years of passing by the founder, I had the courage to ask him for a meeting. We had a great talk. At a certain point, I asked him how far he thought I could go in his company. He said, “If you want to, you can get all the way to this seat.”

I’ve become vice president but that hasn’t changed the way I approach people. I still follow my mother’s advice. I speak to everyone I see, no matter where I am. I’ve learned that speaking to people creates a pathway into their world, and it lets them come into mine, too.

The day you speak to someone who has their head held down and when they lift it up and smile, you realize how powerful it is just to open your mouth and say, “Hello.”

Hydrogen has taken off in 2020 as the future green fuel of choice, with governments and businesses betting big that the universe’s most abundant element can help fight climate change. More than $150 billion worth of green hydrogen projects have been announced globally in the past nine months. In total, more than 70 gigawatts of such projects are in development, which could require $250 billion worth of investment by 2040, research firm Rystad Energy estimates.

China, Japan and South Korea recently joined a slew of European countries setting net zero targets for carbon emissions by the middle of the century. While most developed countries along with China and India plan to boost renewable power output, the net zero emissions targets are driving a push to find ways to decarbonize industries that cannot be electrified and depend on fossil fuels. The main targets are those sectors that use coal, oil and gas as raw materials, such as in steel-making, cement and fertilizers, and in shipping and aviation.

Hydrogen, long used as rocket fuel, is mainly used in oil refining and to produce ammonia for fertilizers. Today it is mostly extracted from natural gas or coal, called grey hydrogen, in processes that emit 830 million tons

a year of carbon dioxide, according to the International Energy Agency.
